Aloo Sadeko is a popular and traditional Nepali dish that is usually served as an accompaniment to Dal Bhat. It’s a simple dish made with potatoes, onion, tomato, garlic, green chili peppers, mustard oil and a mix of spices like fenugreek, red chili powder, turmeric powder and cumin powder. - 1 lb red potatoes
- 1 small sized onion
- 1 tomato
- 2 garlic cloves (finely chopped)
- 2 green chili peppers
- 2 tablespoons of mustard oil (bhuteko tori ko tel is preferred)
- 1 teaspoon of ginger paste
- Salt to taste
- ½ teaspoon of fenugreek seed
- ½ teaspoon of red chili powder
- 1 teaspoon of coriander powder
- ¼ tablespoon of turmeric powder
- 1 tablespoon of cilantro (finely chopped) Lemon juice -1 tablespoon
1. Clean the potatoes and put them in a pressure cooker.
2. Add one teaspoon of salt and about a glass of water.
3. Let the potatoes boil in the cooker for 10 minutes before turning off the heat.
4. Finely chop onion, tomato and green chili peppers while waiting for the potatoes to boil.
5. Once they have boiled, let them cool enough to touch before cutting each potato into four parts and transferring them into a large bowl.
6. Add onion, tomato and green chili peppers to the bowl with cut potatoes, red chili powder, and coriander powder and mix well until everything is evenly distributed.
7. Add oil, ginger paste, garlic, and mustard oil to the bowl and mix until everything is evenly combined.
8. Add lemon juice to the mixture and stir it in.
9. Heat a pan with one tablespoon of oil before adding fenugreek seed.
10. When the fenugreek seed turns black, switch off the heat and add turmeric powder to it immediately before transferring it into the potato mix bowl.
11. Stir everything together until all ingredients are evenly distributed before serving your Aloo Sadeko dish!
